After a bomb-ass sleep, waking up to get ready for work or school is definitely a struggle we all deal with. Coffee sometimes doesn’t seem to cut it and who’s about to take a cold shower? Nobody! So to help ya’ll start strong and make it through the day, I’m sharing five easy ways to help you wake up rejuvenated!

Eat Breakfast and Make It Good

Coming from someone who’s never had a problem eating breakfast, breakfast is that girl in terms of allowing you to feel refreshed and energized in the mornings. If you’re anything like me, then super heavy meals will do nothing but put you back in bed due to a case of the ‘itis.’ So I opt for healthier meals like oatmeal, trail mix, and fruits with heavy Vitamin C and B on workdays or days that I have a lot to do!

Make Your Bed

Now I know I may be getting some side-eyes with this one, but in my opinion, making your bed either in the morning or before you get in it, is a simple act of self-care. For me, a made-up bed gives me peace of mind and it compels me to keep my room clean. Imagine you’ve had a rough day at work, your mind is all boggled and scrambled, and you come home to an unmade bed. What a travesty! If you’re not a morning person like me, even making your bed before getting right in it can also ease the mind and reduce stress.

Light a Candle

I burn through candles like it’s nobody’s business because it’s a form of comfort for me. The best time to light a candle, of course, is when the house is clean from top to bottom, but who has time to wait on that just to light a candle? I’ve found that lighting candles right before bed relaxes me because by the time it’s gotten good and melted, I’m drifting off into la-la land. I also want to emphasize using candles as a form of aromatherapy. I love essential oils, but I have dogs and some oils [orange and eucalyptus] can be problematic for them. To get the same effect of the oils, I pick candle scents for different points of focus. For example:

Sleep: lavender, bergamot, sandalwood

Focus: Lemon, peppermint, sage, rosemary

Energy: grapefruit, lemon, cinnamon

Anxiety: rose, ylang-ylang, chamomile

Take a Shower In the Morning

Okay, I know this is a personal preference, and I take showers both at night and in the morning, but I do notice I’m more energized when I take morning baths with a body wash that has a citrus scent. Plus, morning showers forces you to get out of the bed a little bit earlier, which will hopefully encourage you to maximize your time!


As my homeboy said, “if you ain’t sleepy from working out, then you ain’t work out!” Working out is the easiest way to knock you out in the evening, or wake you up in the morning. Me personally, I prefer morning workouts, but since I refuse to wake up at 3 am every day, I opt for afternoon or evening workouts. However, on weekends, that early morning workout gets me pumped for a full day.
